Fort Harrison State Park to Host World War II Days May 16 & 17

Families, veterans and military enthusiasts alike are all invited to attend World War II Days, to be held at Fort Harrison State Park on May 16th and 17th from 10a to 4p at the new Visitor’s Center.

Featured events over the weekend include weapons demonstrations, a simulated grenade toss for kids, an indoor display honoring Veterans, and a tactical battle re-enactment on Saturday at 2:00p.m. In case of inclement weather, some small activities may be moved inside the new park Visitor Center. Food will be available on site for purchase through The Garrison. The program is open to the public; everyone is welcome to attend.

Fort Harrison State Park was once the home of Fort Benjamin Harrison, a major US Army installation from 1904 to 1995. During WWII, Fort Harrison had several specialized training schools for the US Army including a Baker’s and Cooks’ School, the beginning of the Army Finance Center, a Chaplain’s School, several base hospitals, and a POW camp that once held German and Italian prisoners. Fort Harrison was turned over to the Department of Natural Resources for a State Park through the National Park Service in 1996, creating Fort Harrison State Park.

All events will take place behind the new Center from 10a to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. There is no fee for this program although the weekend DNR gate-fee of $5/in-state and $7/outof- state does apply. Annual Park Passes are also available for purchase at the front gate.

More information about this event is available by calling the new park Visitor Center at (317) 591-0122.
