It’s not April any more but today we had
Blue Grosbeak along Lower Fort Knox Road
at the creek. A little farther along we
had White-eyed Vireo. At Ouabache Trails,
we added Blackpoll, Bay-reasted Warbler,
Blackburian Warbler along with eight or so
others that we have already seen this spring.

Of course there are Chimney Swifts all over town today.

These are just a few notable birds and such that I’ve observed in the last few days. Along Oliphant ditch (between college ave and Hardee’s) I continue to see the resident GRHE. Ive also had 2 SOSA and my FOY EAKI,and BAOR. I managed to get over to the Hwy 50 wetlands and had GRYE,LEYE,SOSA,and a possible PESA.On my way to work the other day I saw a PIWO perched out in the open on some cut logs that were in Micheal Jordan’s (seriously) yard on McDowell road just before you get to Forbes rd. Finnally probably the coolest thing I’ve seen all week was a red fox standing in the middle of the road at the corner of College Ave. and Daily Ave. I was walking home from my mothers house ,about midnight maybe alittle later, I used my shortcut along Oliphant ditch and he was there when I emerged from former Mayor Mooney’s yard.

Hey Merlin,

I heard you had taken pictures of the Clay-colored Sparrow. Anxius to see them.
I’m sure you had a fun trip.

The only new bird we have noticed in the last few days is a Summer Tanager at Ouabache Trails. It was too rainy and windy yesterday to get much. Hopefully today will be better.

Got poor pictures of a rain-drenched adult Red-shouldered Hawk at OT yesterday.
Not enough light for sharp pictures. Frown It slowed down the shutter speed too much for a hand held 600mm shot. I plan to take the extender off the camera and see how that does.

Trip to Plainfield Illinois:

Thought I would post although this was an Illinois trip. Went to see an old friend and fellow birder, Denny “Dino” Jones. We birded Whalon Woods/preserve north of Plainfield on Sat, and Goose Prairie, along the Kankakee river on Sun. The highlight was at Denny’s house, Sunday a.m…. It was too rainy to get out so we sat at his dining room window and birded his back yard/feeders. Saw House Finch, Goldfinch, Cardinals, Doves, FOY Ruby-throated Hummer, Swamp sparrow, and… Clay Colored Sparrow!! Got some marginal pics (poor light), but will post here and on my Flickr site soon. Also saw 2 Sora at Whalon (very cool), as well as BWTE, NOHA, GREG, GBHE, RTHA, MALL, Bonaparte’s Gull, RBGU, TRSW, RWSW, AMCO, TUVU, NOSH.

Later at Goose Prairie, had 19 Amer White Pelicans (flyover), 1 Osprey, 15 Cormorant, GBHE, House Wren, Palm Warbler, and probable Henslow’s sparrow in a known breeding area. We were able to “call” him and get a response, but only a brief glance as he popped up and advanced about 10 feet before going down again in the prairie grass. (very windy)

Great birding weekend… (even though it was Illinois… Ha!)

Annuals we have added over the weekend, are Green Heron on Ramsey Road.

In Gibson county at Saunder’s Woods, we added Common Yellowthroat, Prothonotary Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Great-cresed Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Scarlet Tanager (if I hadn’t mentioned it before), Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Magnolia, Tennessee, and Blue-winged Warblers, and Wood Thrush (and Swainson’s if I haven’t already mentioned it).

At Cane Ridge, we had one Wilson’s Phalarope, 2 Black-necked Stilts and several Dickcissels.

At Ouabache Trails, we had more of some of the above warblers and thrushes.

Among the birds we had yesterday between rains were 5 N. Parulas,1 Black-throated Green,1 Louisiana Waterthrush,1 Yellow-throated, and 1 Scarlet Tanager at Oubache Trails Park.

The “boot” of Knox Co provided our first Lark Sparrow of the year in its usual breeding location.

Despite the rains and standing water, there were very few shorebirds.

On 4-15-09 I had a FOY spotted sandpiper. I observed him on my neighbors dock for about 30 and long enough to get a good view with my binoculars. He walked around on the edge for a sec then flew off. What a pretty bird!

I might keep you up to date on some of our April arrivals. Of course this is already mid-April so this is playing catch up. Birds most have already seen probably this year are Tree and N. Rough-winged Swallows as well as now arriving Purple Martins and Barn Swallows all at Mirror/Indian Lakes in Vincennes. We finally found some Pectoral Sandpipers in southern Knox County off Sixth Street Road (as well as both Yellowlegs). Still no American Golden Plovers although they are being seen many other places.

At Hillcrest Park, we had Yellow-throated Warbler by the playground. This is a common place for them in spring if you want to look for them.

I finally found my first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher of the year for Indiana at Ouabache Trails. As soon as the weather improves, we will surely get more arrivals.
